St. Charles College photo caption “In 1830, Emily Caton MacTavish, a granddaughter of Charles Carroll of Carrolton, convinced her grandfather to give land and money to build a preparatory institute for the Sulpician Order of the Roman Catholic priesthood. By 1831 plans and a charter were in hand and Charles had assisted in laying the cornerstone. The first building of St. Charles, after much delay, opened in 1848 with the president, Father Oliver Jenkins; a deacon, Edward Caton; and four students. After fifty years nine hundred students had been ordained and several additions added. The seminary stood along Rt. 144 near the intersection with Manor lane(sic) in Howard County. Fire destroyed the building in March of 1911. The Ellicott City Fire Department responded but had no source of water. The building was completely destroyed. Later uses of the property were for Brendel’s Park and a Gospel Park. Today (2011) a residential community occupies some of the property.
